Psappha: Reich, Carter and Crumb in Ancoats

    7:30pm

Hallé St. Michael's, 36-38 George Leigh Street, Ancoats, Manchester, M4 5DG

    Steve Reich Double Sextet
    Elliot Carter Triple Duo*
    George Crumb Quest**

    *Conducted by Jamie Phillips
    **Tom McKinney – guitar soloist

An evening of American music in a special programme for BBC Radio 3 which will be broadcast live from St Michael’s.

Steve Reich’s Double Sextet features the regular compact ensemble for new music – piano and percussion, flute and clarinet, violin and cello – playing with and against a recorded double of itself. This is classic Reich: propulsive from the get-go, driving through wondrous harmonic landscapes, and with a haunting melodic poetry that is this composer’s own.

George Crumb’s atmospheric Quest is a journey for solo guitar, sax, harp, and bass over a delicate web of exotic percussion, with quotes from Amazing Grace along the way.

Elliot Carter’s Triple Duo, for an ensemble of six musicians, is a work, as its name implies, that treats the group as three pairs of instruments: flute/clarinet, violin/cello, piano/percussion. Each of these pairs has its own repertory of ideas and moods. This free fantasy involves various contrasts, conflicts and reconciliations between the three duos.

In his Horn Trio György Ligeti found a fresh path to a new style that was, in his words, neither a cliché of the reactionary nor the avant-garde.

The concert begins with Jennifer Higdon’s entertaining and exuberant Zaka and also includes two new works by young composers from The University of Manchester
